On his first day running telecoms provider Blueface in December 2009, Alan Foy declared his ambition that the company would be top in its sector in the world. It was a lofty declaration; the Dublin company had about five staff at the time and Foy was 27 years old.

“Even the biggest believer was wondering if I’d lost my mind,” says Foy. “Everyone thought I was mad.”

Eight years on, he is edging closer to achieving his ambition for Blueface. Now employing 70 staff, the company kicked off 2018 with a merger with Star2Star Communications, a Florida-based rival, creating StarBlue, a top-five player in the growing cloud telecoms sector.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Foy is not disputing a Financial Times report
